History of Shipping

On July 3, 1646, during the Turkish siege and conquest of Novigrad, the citizens of Novigrad fled to the island of Pag in seven boats. 
On March 31, 1647, Novigrad was liberated from the Turks with a strong naval blockade of the Venetian fleet. 
In 1797, after the fall of the Venetian Republic, the Venetian fleet was stationed in the port of Novigrad.
In the 1860s, a port representative office was opened in Novigrad.
In 1890, the Ministry of Trade of Austria introduced a postal shipping line from Rijeka to Obrovac, which also connected Novigrad. 
1915-1917 part of the Austro-Hungarian merchant fleet was stationed in Novigrad and the Novigrad Sea.
On July 19, 1916, a bomb was thrown from an Italian plane on the steamer "Laguna" located in the port of Novigrad. It was the first aerial bombardment of Novigrad. 
In 1946, a lighthouse was built on “Punta” St. Nicholas at the entrance to the Novigrad harbor.
In 1964 - 1967, the shipping line Rijeka - Novigrad was maintained only as a seasonal one. The last ship that came to Novigrad was the MB Tuzla.
