Towards the end of the 19th century, the first steamboat line was introduced to Novigrad. The first steamship on a regular commercial line, owned by the Rismonda company, sailed from Makarska to Novigrad in 1896. From then until the abolition of shipping lines in 1967, Novigrad was an important port of Ravni district where the representative offices of Pio Negri from Zadar, Ungaro-Croata from Rijeka, Dalmatia from Trieste, Jadranske plovidba d.d. from Sušak and Jadrolinija from Rijeka.
